Comical Egypt: Part 2

Cairo, Damn it, its really hot here and theres so much dust in the air. good thing im gonna stay at the Cairo Marriott for the next 5 days. 5 star treatment all the way homes! booyahh!
______________________________________

unfortunately, good things, they never last. after 5 days of 5 star treatment it was time to move to my dad's place. it wasnt that bad afterall. i kinda imagined something much more 'sloppier'. for an apartment, interior wise, it was rather large and stylish, though the exterior of the building looked like it would crumble sometime soon. it came fully furnished with artistic paintings on the wall, sleek bathrooms and central air conditioning. cant complain much. well...that was until i found out the refrigerator was busted, the flush doesnt flush and how quickly the house gets covered in dust if you opened the windows.bahh!!

did you know that cairo is the sixteenth most populous metropolitan area in the world? thats an impressive list to be on. hence it explains the overcrowded roads, people sleeping in garages, pollution and extensive roads. so, if you think you're bad with directions...DONT DRIVE IN CAIRO! you might end up in another dimension, if you know what i mean.

apart from that, among the many pollutions one would notice here in cairo is sound pollution. it took me about two days to adjust myself to the noise.if im not mistaken, i was told that the noise level here in cairo is almost the same as in india. maybe more, maybe less. thats just loud. for some reason, drivers here honk their cars every two seconds. by the looks of it, it seems as if they somewhat enjoy it and if there isnt a reason to honk, they'll make up one. even those people riding bicycles, donkeys or horses have their horns too(if they dont, they scream).

oh, one more thing, traffic lights here
are only for display. i doubt anyone ever did obey it- or would for that matter.therefore, since the people here find it hard to obey traffic lights, the government place policemen to aid the traffic, especially in congested areas. i swear to god, this place is a freaking nightmare for ethical drivers.

however, no matter how aggressive the road users here are, they tend to be courteous at intersections and taking turns. meaning, if you're a pedestrian, you're completely safe. thats the good thing about this place. drivers here stop for pedestrians(unlike some places i know). if you still wanna worry yourself about getting hit while crossing a street, id recommend that you worry about bumping into another person crossing the street.

The Great Pyramids of Giza

Adapted from www.wikipedia.com

The Giza Necropolis stands on the Giza Plateau, on the outskirts of Cairo, Egypt. This complex of ancient monuments is located some 8 km (5 mi) inland into the desert from the old town of Giza on the Nile, some 25 km (15 mi) southwest of Cairo city centre. The Great pyramid is the only remaining monument of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

This Ancient Egyptian necropolis consists of the Pyramid of Khufu (known as the Great PyramidPyramid of Cheops), the somewhat smaller Pyramid of Khafre (or Chephren) a few hundred metres to the south-west, and the relatively modest-size Pyramid of MenkaureGreat S
phinx lies on the east side of the complex, facing east. Current consensus among Egyptologists is that the head of the Great Sphinx is that of Khafre. Associated with these royal monuments are the tombs of high officials and much later burials and monuments, signifying the reverence to those buried in the necropolis.

from my perspective, those pyramids were awesome, it'd be even more awesome if i was into architecture or anything along that line because maybe then, i'd appreciate it even more.

anyways, you'd have to be at least a few hundred metres away, or more, just so you can take a pic of the whole thing and its funny how looking at these pyramids will send your mind into a deep thinking state with the question, "how?". how did they manage to build something so...er...ridiculously large with much precision? i tried to convince myself
that some form of extra terrestrial being helped the pharaohs to build these pyramids, they say seeing is believing.

what were they thinking at that time? seriously?id do anything to pick out their brains piece by piece just to get an answer.

take note, trying to be a shutter bug in the desert is a stupid idea, especially during summer. you cant see nuts on your display screen. hence the n
ot so nice pics. oh btw, i came across this guy who was riding a donkey and he was three times larger than his donkey. the animal looked like it was in pain and im certain i heard it making some weird noises.

The Great Sphinx of G
iza

Adapted from www.wikipedia.com

The Great Sphinx of Giza (Arabic: أبو الهول "The Father of Fear") is a half-human, half-lion Sphinx statue in Egypt, on the Giza Plateau at the west bank of the Nile River, near modern-day Cairo. The largest monolith statue in the world, it stands 73.5 metres (241 ft) long, 6 m (20 ft) wide, and 20 m (65 ft) high. Commonly believed to have been built by ancient Egyptians in the 3rd millennium BC, it is the earliest known monumental sculpture.

The Great Sphinx is one of the world’s largest and oldest statues, yet basic facts about it such as the real-life model for the face, when it was built, and by whom, are debated. These questions have collectively earned the title “Riddle of the Sphinx,”[citation needed] a nod to its Greek namesake, although this phrase should not be confused with the original Greek legend.

The Great Sphinx is thought by most Egyptologists to represent the likeness of King Khafra (also known by the Hellenised version of his name, Chephren) who is often credited as the builder as well. This would place the time of construction somewhere between 2520 BC and 2494 BC. Because the limited evidence giving provenance to Khafra is ambiguous and circumstantial, the idea of who built the Sphinx, and when, continues to be the subject of debate. As Dr. Selim Hassan stated in his report regarding his excavation of the Sphinx enclosure of the 1940s:

Taking all things into consideration, it seems that we must give the credit of erecting this, the world’s most wonderful statue, to Khafre, but always with this reservation that there is not one single contemporary inscription which connects the Sphinx with Khafre, so sound as it may appear, we must treat the evidence as circumstantial, until such time as a lucky turn of the spade of the excavator will reveal to the world a definite reference to the erection of the Sphinx.

word of advice, if you ever visit the pyramids, the sphinx, or any other tourist attraction spots, do not, i repeat, do not fall for the horse rides. it may be stinking hot but just walk. all the pyramids are within walking distance. this is because...im not too sure about the camels, but the price for a 45 minute horse ride is outrageous.

well, to be honest its not that expensive actually. the ride goes by head. an hour tour would cost you around 120 egyptian pounds. reasonable right? WRONG! thats only the beginning of it all.

keep in mind that everything here in egypt runs on the basis of tips. there will come up with all sorts of reasons like they have to pay the owner of the horse, they come there only once a month or some other bullshit. they even charge you if they can talk in english. crazy right. sad thing is, by the time you realize that you'r being conned, you've already lost about 400 egyptian pounds or more- if you'r really unlucky. so basically, here's a sample argument(based on true events):

my brother: we paid you already!
guide:no, that my friend for my friend. he owns the horse. now you pay for me. i speak good english.
me: good or not it doesnt matter. we paid you. no more!
guide: my friend, i come here once a month. you pay me today then next month i come again. if i come tomorrow the police beat me.
me/my brother: its none of our business. we paid you.
guide: look my friend, i speak good english. you understand me. i show you pyramids and sphinx. you have good time, i have good time, your driver have good time. only 200 egyptian pounds. dont break my chance.
me: (what chance you freaking conman???)
guide: dont break my chance my friend.

get what i mean?

we ended up paying another 150 or so egyptian pounds on top of the fix rate of 120 egyptian pounds per head(there were 3 of us). so do the math. theres just no winning with these people. no im not expressing my anger but merely giving a heads up of the many unfortunate events one would come across here in egypt, or any other part of the world for that matter. trust me...so before you visit egypt or any other middle eastern country, ask yourself:

are you fit for an argument and do you have a loud voice>
or...
do i have enough small change for tips?

haram!

Dear Mischa Barton

hell yea~!

Change?

honestly, this business of dissing people discreetly is starting to wear me thin. i dont mean to make people hate me but thats just how i am. what am i supposed to do about it? change? lets not lie to ourselves now shall we. we all know it takes a whole lot of determination and hardwork to actually change. and obviously, i aint one of those determined/ dedicated/ commited type whatsoever.

the weird thing about change is this-normally people dont realize they're changing. but when they arent changing, they think they are. also, when people change, they always think they've changed, or turned into something bigger, better or just-above others. never the other way round. including me.

ya ya ya~~
what a pointless post.

this post should actually go into the 'notes' application on facebook.
naah. iv written too many notes. its time i scribbled here more often.
